WHAT IS A REALITY STORE?

Reality Store is a chance to find out what it's like to work the job you want and live within your budget
on the pay you would earn for that job. WorkOne sponsors or participates in reality store experiences
in high schools and junior high schools throughout Lake County.

Here, Seniors from the Hammond Career Center sign in at the Reality Store. Our Hammond Center has worked with Reality Stores for Calumet, Clark Gavit, Griffith, Hammond High, Lake Central, Morton and Munster. Youth choose how much time the intend to spend in school after high school, then pick a career with that level of education. Once a career is chosen, they are told the typical pay for that job and must live within their means--after we take out for Social Security, Federal and State taxes. Then their are options like health insurance, life insurance and pensions.

With what's left over they must choose a house or apartment, a car and other lifestyle options including marriage and children. Food is another necessity. Here, a representative from Van Til's Foods educates students on the difference in price between name brand products and store brands and how careful buying can stretch their grocery budget

A representative from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles explains the ins and outs of driver's licenses, motor vehicle registration, and insurance requirements.

Other community volunteers discuss housing costs, insurance, credit, banking and other choices.

Along the way, unforeseen circumstances may affect our lives. Illness, injury, getting sued by a neighbor when your dog bites him and of course, car accidents. Did you opt for that insurance?

Here, a volunteer police officers gives one of the students a sobriety test when he suspects that the young man has been "driving under the influence."

After complete a Reality Store Experience, students have a better idea of what it will take to maintain the lifestyle they would like to live and better understand the requirements of the careers in which they have an interest. They can learn more about a job's skill and education requirements and be better prepared to reach realistic career goals. If your school or youth organization is interested in hosting a Reality Store Experience, contact the WorkOne Center nearest you.
